Janet Jackson was reportedly hospitalized in Canada on Monday (September 29) after falling ill just before she was scheduled to perform.
According to the Associated Press, the singer's publicist released a statement which said that she had canceled her concert in Montreal Monday after she "got suddenly ill" during her sound check and had to be rushed to the hospital just before show time.
At press time, Jackson was being monitored at the unnamed hospital, but further information regarding her condition was not given.
She does, however, plan to reschedule her show.
The 42-year-old is currently on her North American Rock Witchu tour.
Last week, she cancelled a weekend stop in Detroit due to "production constraints".

MTV, Diddy & Mark Burnett Search For The Next Superstar with "Star Maker"
GREENLIT FOR JANUARY '09
New York, New York – September 30, 2008 – MTV teams up with entertainment powerhouse Sean Combs and revolutionary, Emmy Award winning producer Mark Burnett for the brand new reality series "StarMaker." The new series will set out to find the next history making superstars. MTV and Sean Combs have been developing "StarMaker" since fall of '07 and made the decision to bring Mark Burnett on board this spring. "StarMaker" is greenlit for January 2009.
"StarMaker" will showcase aspiring solo artists who will compete with the added pressure of living together. In the new series, Sean Combs will continue to do what he does best on the hit series "Making The Band," spot the best talent while pushing them to their limits. But in this new format both men and women will be competing as individuals for the top spot. Sean Combs' hand picked team of star makers will put them through the rigors of "StarMaker" boot camp which extends well beyond just a contestant's ability to sing. In addition to having to perform in front of an audience each week the contestants will be tested on how well they handle photo shoots, deal with paparazzi, physically perform on stage and more.
"It's a privilege to partner with Mark Burnett on my latest television venture. He is one of the industry's best. I am confident that we will do great things together with "StarMaker" and beyond," remarks Sean Combs.
"I'm looking forward to collaborating with MTV and Sean Combs on this new project" said Mark Burnett. "StarMaker will open the door to the tremendous amount of talent out there just waiting to be discovered. We've created a platform that will allow new and emerging artists a chance to showcase their talents to some of the industry's best."
"Sean Combs and Mark Burnett are leaders in the entertainment industry and have both been an integral part of MTV's success throughout the years," said Tony DiSanto, EVP Series Development & Programming, MTV. "Getting these two titans of media together, with their long history of hits across platforms but especially in TV and music is a formula for spectacle, drama and the unexpected."
Emmy nominated executive producer for "Raisin in the Sun," Sean Combs is the ultimate American entertainer and entrepreneur, while wearing many different hats as record producer, CEO, clothing designer, actor, rapper and much, much more. He's made hit records, huge business deals, designer clothing and founded the chart-topping artists Danity Kane and Day26. "StarMaker" will join an already impressive roster of television shows that Sean Combs has executive produced including the hit MTV series "Making The Band," "Run's House" and the most recent VH1 show that he created "I Want to Work For Diddy."
One of the driving forces behind reality television and a true visionary, Mark Burnett has enjoyed a long history of executive producing Emmy Award-winning television, with "Survivor" (CBS) "The Apprentice" (NBC), "Rock Star" (CBS), "Contender" (ESPN) and "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?" (FOX). In 2007 and 2008, Burnett produced the MTV Movie Awards and will again in 2009. Burnett's entrepreneurial spirit pioneered the success of the reality "unscripted" drama series, garnered skyrocketing ratings and introduced millions worldwide to an entirely new television genre.
"StarMaker" is executive produced by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Mark Burnett and Audrey Morrissey. Co-executive producers are Jim Roush and Lee Metzger and Jane Mun is supervising producer. Tony DiSanto, Liz Gateley and Jacquelyn French serve as Executive Producers for MTV.
SEAN COMBS, the CEO and founder of Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group is a multifaceted entertainment powerhouse. Sean "Diddy" Combs was recently declared "One of the Most Influential Businessmen in the World" by Time Magazine and CNN. Combs, 38 oversees one of the world's preeminent urban entertainment companies, encompassing a broad range of businesses including recording, music publishing, artist management, television and film production, recording facility, apparel and restaurants.

Promo CDs, Still Relevant In A Digital World
Randall Roberts considers the fate of the promo cd in a digital world. But, though mailing promo cds may seem wasteful and/or outdated, there are reasons that practice will continue.
Here's a particularly relevant comment about marketing from Forcefield PR's Daniel Gill:
"You have to shove it in somebody's face in order to get anyone to pay attention...That means sending the actual CDs to them in the mail. I could send you digital links until I'm blue in the face for some of my younger bands, but you're not going to listen to it. And I can be realistic about that."
"So I feel like if I at least send you the physical CD, somebody at some point has to open that envelope and look at the CD and decide what pile it goes into. If the artwork catches your eye, maybe you'll listen to it, or something about the band name is cool — or just that it came from me — maybe you'll actually listen to it."
And related comments from Motormouth Media owner Judy Miller Silverman who sees stronger responses from physical as opposed to digital outreach:
"When I send a note out to 1,000 people, saying I have a digital copy of a certain album available, I might get 20 responses. But when I send out a 300-piece mailing, I might be able to get 30 or 40 things secured. People are responding to the more tactile, physical sense of having it on their desk, seeing it, keeping it in their minds."
Though Roberts focuses on cds mailed to reviewers, if you've been to a music industry event and returned with a shopping bag filled with the little critters, you know the promo cd game isn't dead yet but is way too competitive for anybody's good.
That means passing out those CDR's labeled in purple marker may not be the best use of your time.
Note:
Because we live in an all-or-nothing binary consciousness world, some folks will tell you that promo cds are dead because their role has changed and is not as powerful as it once was.
But death is only one form of change.
Find out who responds to promo cds and why and, if that's what you want, get your promo cd to them. If not, don't.

How Will Hip Hop Survive In The Upcoming Years???
The music industry is dead, and the how come doesn't matter. The question now is what next? How does an artist eat in an environment like this where record sales have dropped 20% since last year?
For rock bands, touring and merchandising will become more important than ever. Eventually they will be begging you to download their music for free, as long as you promise to pay 50 in damage for the live show and cop a T-shirt on your way out.
Rap acts though don't tour too tough. However, compared to the rockers, emcees are better suited to survive this new industry fallout. Ever since Diddy declared that anyone who questions how a rapper makes money is a "player hater", it's been open season for even the most indie leaning emcee to appear in commercials and have his own sneaker. Muscicians in other genres have to walk a fine line of art and commerce so they don't offend their fanbase. However, in hip-hop, the number of endorsements you score is part of your marketing plan.
Now, some see this and think there is too much commercialism in hip-hop. Me? I don't think there is enough.
From Sprite to Scion I see corporate sponsors as the new (or the first?) patrons of hip-hop. Back in the day, before recorded music and record labels, musical masters relied on patrons to front them while they made their art. In return for their investment, the wealthy patrons gained a higher social status by being linked to the incredible artists they fronted. Also, they would retain the artist to perform at their parties and write special dedications for themselves or family.
Now, doesn't that sound like how Reebok paid for the pairing of 50 Cent and Jay-Z or how Boost Mobile did the same with Kanye, Ludacris, and The Game?
I'm not mad at any of those examples, because despite the money that's flowing I think hip-hop does a good job of holding to two rules that makes sure the commerce doesn't harm the art:
Rule # 1. Commercials are clearly commercials. Sprite has never tried to pass off one of their famous freestyle spots as an authentic, spontaneous, off-the-top endorsement by a rapper.
Rule # 2. Art is clearly art. When Busta told Pharrell to "Pass the Courvoisier", I don't think he was considering a deal with that liquor brand, even if one came after the fact. He name dropped because it sounded hot, and that's it.
The only pass a rapper can get on rule #2 is if he owns the product he's pushing. Self-promotion is straight hip-hop.
I'm impressed with emcees like 50 Cent who has been able to remain independent and relevant and dangerous with his left hand, yet snatch coin from corporate America with his right. As 50 himself admitted in a Vibe Magazine interview, when asked about declining music sales industry wide, he said he doesn't care if less people buy the record, as long as they buy his clothing, vitamin water, videos game, and movies. 50 is in the business of selling a lifestlye, with music as the bait, a trick that Diddy and Jay-Z learned long ago.
That's the future now of the music business, and I think hip-hop will prosper in it.

Hip Hops Birthplace To Be Sold For 7.5 Million!!!
After attempts by community leaders, tenants and DJ Kool Herc failed to keep the sale of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the South Bronx from being brought via a lawsuit against the building’s landlord and his group, Hip Hop's birthplace 1520 Sedgwick Avenue will be sold to real estate developer Mark Karasick for an estimated $7.5 million as early as next week.
Friday the State Supreme Court ruled against DJ Kool Herc and his supporters in favor of greedy of developers in an all too familiar scenario. Though Hip Hop's Eden no longer remains in it's essence, the culture can never be bought.

Record Labels Adopt New Technology To Sell Albums In Sagging Market
Rihanna, Usher, Chris Brown, Akon and others will lead the recording industry’s first major move away from the traditional CD format with to the introduction of slotMusic next month.
According to the Wall Street Journal, SanDisk Corp. and the four remaining major record companies have teamed up to create album-filled memory cards that will be usable on mobile phones, PCs and select portable MP3 players. The first offering of releases will include 29 albums sold in MP3 format without digital locks along with an adapter to allow consumers the ability to transfer their purchases to PCs from the USB ports.
SanDisk’s general manger of audio-video business Daniel Schreiber is convinced slotMusic will strive due to its multi-compatibility with different devices.
“I don’t have to convince you to buy anything; you already own it,” Schreiber told Wall Street Journal. “I don’t have to convince you to carry anything; you’re already carrying it.”
Expected to sell around the $15 price point in stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, other artists included in the debut batch will be Robin Thicke, New Kids on the Block, Weezer, Leona Lewis and Elvis Presley.
Composed of EMI, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group and a joint venture with Sony and Bertelsmann AG, the record companies’ decision to make the digital move comes months after the success of artists like Flo Rida who previously spoke with SOHH about his record setting single “Low.”
“I thought it would be big but at this magnitude I definitely couldn’t predict it,” he told SOHH about “Low” being No. 1 for ten weeks on Billboard’s Top 100. “It’s just unbelievable. I have to pinch myself sometimes.”
Despite poor record sales reportedly forcing labels to try alternate methods, other artists have had no trouble selling albums including Lil’ Wayne who sold over one million copies of Tha Carter III in his opening week last June.
The new device is currently scheduled to hit retail stores around mid-October.

Jay-Z & Stargate Officially Announce New Label, StarRoc
StarRoc Establishes Partnership through Roc Nation / Live Nation
NEW YORK, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Shawn "JAY-Z" Carter and multiple Grammy nominated production duo Stargate have officially announced the formation of StarRoc. Roc Nation has struck a global partnership deal with Stargate encompassing both a music label and publishing company, StarRoc Music Publishing. It is the first partnership for Roc Nation, JAY-Z's official venture with Live Nation.
"Stargate were like a secret weapon. We had great success with Rihanna and Ne-Yo. In only 2 years, they've generated 10 singles in the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and 3 of those singles hit the # 1 position. This has been a rewarding partnership and it was time to take the creative venture to the next level," commented JAY-Z.
"We've already had a lot of success together and look forward to building the new company," added Stargate. "Roc Nation and Live Nation are two of the most exciting companies in the music business today and we want to be part of that future."
StarRoc, based in New York, is a natural next step for the Norwegian duo that have already had successful collaborations with JAY-Z and the Carter Administration. Most recently Stargate has scored with the #1 songs "Irreplaceable" (Beyonce), "Take A Bow" (Rihanna), "Closer" (Ne-Yo) and "Unfaithful" (Rihanna). The focus is to find new talent and develop artists through mutually beneficial global partnerships which include music distribution, publishing, touring and merchandising.
Stargate, comprised of Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen are 6x time Grammy nominated 2008 producers, the 2007 PRS/ASCAP Songwriters of the Year, 2008 Rolling Stone Magazine Hitmakers of the Year, 2008 Ivor Novello Award recipients, Billboard #1 Hot Producers 2006 and multiaward- winning ASCAP songwriters 2006-2008.
This groundbreaking new division, headed by Shawn Carter will partner with artists to manage their diverse rights, expand their fan bases and provide a direct connection to fans through the global distribution platform and marketing proficiencies that have made Live Nation the world's largest live music company. Artist Nation is an equal partner in the new business unit. Utilizing Live Nation's global resources Roc Nation will provide a full range of services to the Roc Nation roster.
ABOUT LIVE NATION:

DJ AM Released From Hospital
Less than a week after the plane crash that took the lives of four people and seriously injured DJ AM and Travis Barker, DJ AM has been released from the Doctors Hospital in Georgia and is returning to Los Angeles, according to his publicist.
“While he is deeply saddened by the events, he is thankful for all of the love and support he has been receiving from fans and friends worldwide,” the rep said. “We ask that you continue to respect his privacy as he rests and heals and mourns the loss of his friends.”
AM updated his Facebook status on Friday (September 26), sharing his first public message since the crash. “Adam Goldstein is the luckiest guy alive,” his status now reads.
While no official news has been released about Travis Barker, who was also injured in the crash, Jermaine Dupri commented to People.com about his condition, saying that Barker will be released from the hospital in “about two weeks.”
On Tuesday, Barker was reportedly trying to stay optimistic after multiple surgeries related to the crash, friend Bill Nosal told The Associated Press.
“If you make it out of a crash of that magnitude, somebody’s looking out for you,” said Nosal, who is also the spokesperson for Barker’s clothing company, Famous Stars and Straps. “He’s trying to stay upbeat.”
Nosal said that Chris Baker, Barker’s personal assistant who died in the Columbia, South Carolina, crash on Friday, “was like extended family.” Barker also lost his bodyguard, Charles Still, in the crash, although Nosal pointed out that the drummer didn’t always travel with security. The pilot and the co-pilot, Sarah Lemmon and James Bland, also died.
Lieutenant Josh Shumpert of the South Congaree, South Carolina, police department spoke to People.com about what he saw when he arrived at the scene. “[Barker and AM] told me that they slid down the wing on the right side of the plane,” he said. “They said they were on fire and that they tackled each other and put each other out.
“When I got there, they were on the side of the road,” he continued. “They were pacing and in shock. Travis was very shaken up.”
Federal investigators are looking into the possibility that a blown tire could have contributed to the crash. They’ve found evidence that one of the jet’s tires may have blown moments before takeoff at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Audio from the jet’s cockpit voice recorder indicates that the pilot and co-pilot informed air-traffic controllers they’d heard a tire burst and tried to abort the takeoff.

Travis Barker to Spend 2 More Weeks In Hospital
The latest update on Travis Barker — who was critically injured in a plane crash that killed four others and left DJ AM with severe burns — comes from the former Blink-182 drummer’s friend Jermaine Dupri.
“He’s doing good. He’s gonna be alright. He’s just got a lot of healing to do,” the music producer told People.com. Dupri added that he thinks Barker will be in the hospital for about two more weeks. He visited the drummer, who is also his partner in the So So Def clothing line, on Sunday.
Dupri said he was shocked when he heard that Barker had been in the accident. “I was at home. Somebody called me early in the morning,” he said. “It was kind of crazy, and I didn’t really comprehend what had happened.”
Barker, whose torso and lower part of his body were burned in the crash, is doing well emotionally, according to Dupri. “He’s supposed to send a message out to everybody in a couple of days to let everybody know that he’s feeling better,” he said. “He’s definitely feeling the love from everyone.”
Dupri said that Barker’s hospital room has been outfitted to keep him in good spirits and ensure he heals in a happy environment. “He’s just now getting everything in the hospital set up for him — iPods, computers, everything that he needs,” Dupri told the site. “You got to make sure he is comfortable.”
On Sunday, a doctor from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, where Barker and AM are being treated, announced that the musicians are expected to make full recoveries. And Dupri thinks that Barker is right on track in the healing process: “I think everything will be cool when I get back there [to see him]. He’ll probably be up and talking crazy and all that — back to his old self.”
Chris Baker, Barker’s personal assistant, died in the Columbia, South Carolina, crash on Friday, along with bodyguard Charles Still and the plane’s pilot and co-pilot, Sarah Lemmon and James Bland. Baker’s mom, Linda Warn, spoke to MomLogic.com this week, revealing that another of her sons had died just 31 days before the plane crash.
“When one happens, you think, ‘God, that’s some really bad luck,’ ” Warn told the site. “It’s not supposed to happen this way. We’re supposed to [outlive our kids]. With the second one, there’s anger and then there’s disbelief. There is that question of ‘What could we possibly have done so bad to be punished like this?’ But the bottom line is that it’s nothing we did. It’s nature. Our friend says, ‘It is what it is.’ And that’s where we’re at.”
Warn recalled that a friend had once said her son “wasn’t a person — he was an event.”
“In his 29 years, he crammed more in than most 80-year-olds,” she said. “He traveled the world … saw the ‘Mona Lisa’ and hung out in a pub with Prince William and Harry.”

DMX In Hospital!!!
Controversial rapper DMX was recently rushed to an emergency room in Florida due to health related concerns.
According to TMZ, the former Def Jam artist was reportedly taken to a medical facility yesterday (September 22) in Aventura for an alleged “fear of stroke.” X’s last stint at a center was when he missed a court date last month due to allegedly being admitted into a Miami hospital with intent to attend a rehabilitation program on the same day.
Ironically, X was also scheduled to appear in an Arizona court today but it is unlikely he will be able to do so.
As previously reported by SOHH, the multi-platinum selling rapper was extradited from Florida to an Arizona jail earlier this month to face charges he accumulated in the state.
As reported in the Arizona Republic, X was moved from a Miami Dade County on September 10 and taken to Phoenix, Arizona’s Maricopa County Jail. In addition to facing felony drug possession charges, X is also expected to defend his numerous traffic violations, animal cruelty accusations, plus defrauding a hospital with an invalid Social Security number and name.
He was held on a strict $25,000 cash-only bond.
As of press time, there has been no word from X’s reps.

Following-up his platinum-selling albums Sweat and Suit, the St. Lunatic teamed up with a star-studded line-up including Akon, Jermaine Dupri, Fergie, T.I., LL Cool J, R.Kelly, Ciara, Rick Ross and more.

Ludacris' Pool House Goes Up In Flames!!!
An unexpected fire has burnt down a portion of rap star Ludacris’ multi-million dollar estate last night near Atlanta.
According to the Associated Press, the rapper/actor was not present during the blaze that destroyed his pool house, but a spokesman for the Fulton County Fire Department said that one of Luda’s relatives was at the main residence when the incident began. The flames were reportedly put out within 30 minutes of the fire department's arrival. While no one suffered any injuries, investigators are currently searching for what sparked the fire.
As previously reported by SOHH’s Ya Heard blog, earlier this month Luda threw a pool party at his home celebrating Labor Day weekend dubbed “Luda Day.” Invited celebrity guests included DJ Drama, Bryan-Michael Cox and Sean Garrett.
In related news the Grammy award-winning artist is currently prepping the release of his sixth solo album, Theater of the Mind, for a November 11th release date. The disc, which features a star-studded guest line-up including The Game, T-Pain, T.I., Lil’ Wayne, Common and Spike Lee, is led by his new single “What Them Girls Like” featuring Chris Brown and Sean Garrett.

50 Cent Wants To Match Eminem & Dr.Dre's Masterpieces
Rap superstar 50 CENT has vowed to sit back and relax after the release of his forthcoming album - he will only return to the music scene when he is "missed" by the public.
The In Da Club hitmaker will release his fourth album, Before I Self Destruct, this December (08), and it will be his penultimate disc for his label Interscope Records.
Plans are currently afoot for a greatest hits collection, which will complete his five-album deal with the firm, leaving him a free agent.
And the star - real name Curtis Jackson - reveals he will be taking it easy once he has fulfilled the terms of his contract, emulating his mentors Eminem and Dr. Dre and only releasing "masterpiece" LPs.
He says, "The luxury that Eminem and Dr. Dre have now, I'll soon have. I'll only be putting out music when I have a masterpiece ready.
"But those guys are ready to put out their masterpieces very soon. Eminem's album is going to blow people away... Like him, I'll only be coming back when people miss me."
Eminem is currently recording tracks for the follow up to 2004's Encore, while superproducer Dr. Dre is putting the finishing touches to his highly-anticipated LP Detox - only his third solo album to date and the first since the 1999 release of 2001.

Snoop Dogg Able To Tour In Australia
Snoop Dogg’s Australian tour has officially been green lighted by the country’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship it was announced today (September 12).
As previously reported by AllHipHop.com, Snoop Dogg is now able to tour the country with fellow gangster rap pioneer Ice Cube and a recently reunited Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
In 2007, Snoop Dogg, born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. was not permitted to enter the country to host MTV’s Australian Video Awards ceremony, due to his past criminal record.
After a full character assessment, the government has decided to issue the rap star a Visa to enter the country.
"Given his criminal record, the department undertook a full character assessment of Snoop Dogg's criminal history and previous conduct before making a decision on his visa application," a spokesman said in a statement.
In making this decision, the department weighed his criminal convictions against his previous behaviour while in Australia, recent conduct - including charity work - and any likely risk to the Australian community. We took into account all relevant factors and, on balance, the department decided to grant the visa."
If Snoop runs into any trouble on the tour, the Visa will be revoked immediately and he will be deported from the country.
McManus, who has already paid out over $1.2 million dollars to package the tour, had already paid Snoop Dogg a deposit of $600,000.
He lashed out at the government’s last minute reconsideration of the rapper’s immigration status.
"There is no basis for this review. The department has given his visit the all-clear - all this does is hurt my business and the 4000 Australians who would get work from the tour," McManus said.

Lil Wayne To Play Nino Brown In Story
By Ismael AbduSalaam
Lil Wayne has partnered with Streets Talk DVD to release a limited edition documentary entitled The Nino Brown Story, chronicling the chart-topper’s tumultuous professional and personal life on the road.
Drawing on Wayne’s constant lyric references to the 1991 cult classic film New Jack City, the release will chronicle the rapper’s travels throughout major U.S. cities such as Newark, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and his native New Orleans.
This uncensored footage is promised by Streets Talk to show Wayne at his uncensored best while giving fans a never before seen look at his private life and the struggles of being Hip-Hop’s most popular figure.

Kanye "Cool" With Paparazzi.....
According to Kanye West's recent blog post, he's "cool with the paparazzi"... just not the pap that tried to take his picture Thursday morning. The rapper/producer was arrested at the American Airlines terminal at Los Angeles' LAX airport when he, along with with his road manager, allegedly confronted a photographer and smashed the photogs camera to the ground. West and his manager were charged with felony vandalism.
Now, after posting $20,000 bail and leaving Los Angeles via a private jet, West took to his blog. "We back in the lab!!! I'm cool with the paparazzi," West wrote. "This guy wasn't cool. I gotta work now... I'll rant later!" Yeezy is reportedly already back in Honolulu where he's working on his upcoming album, '808's & Heartbreak,' which is set to be released on Dec. 16.

Wyclef Launches Haiti Storm Relief Fund
Singer/rapper/producer Wyclef Jean, along with his Yele Haiti foundation, has launched the Haiti Storm Relief Fund to provide food, water, medical supplies, and other necessities to those affected by the recent storms that have ravaged nation. More than 500 Haitians have died as a result of flooding and more than 600,000 people have been displaced. Jean, a Haitian Goodwill Ambassador, is putting his fame to good use and reaching out to corporations and nearby governments to support storm relief efforts.
"My country is facing a serious catastrophe at the moment and we urgently require assistance," Jean said in a statement. "But the long-term catastrophe is that we have less than two percent tree cover, and without restoring our forests we will always be susceptible to mudslides and flash floods from storms and hurricanes." Jean established Yele Haiti in 2005. Since then the organization has provided scholarships and paid tuition for almost 10,000 students. The foundation launched Together for Haiti, an initiative to help effectively end the food crisis there, in May.

BMF Founders Sentenced To 30 Years Prison
BMF Founders Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison
Published: Sunday - September 14, 2008
Words by Allen Starbury
BMF (Black Mafia Family) founders and brothers, Terry "Southwest T" and Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory, were sentenced to 30 years in prison on Friday (September 12) for running a large scale nationwide cocaine trafficking ring, reports the Detroit Free Press.
The brothers pleaded guilty last year to heading a continuing criminal enterprise, which trafficked large volumes of cocaine throughout the nation from 1990 through 2005.
Their organization generated hundreds of millions of dollars during that time period, affording them luxurious homes, cars, boats, and jewelry. Some of their money was filtered through legitimate business such as BMF Entertainment, a record label who released music from artists such as Bleu DaVinci (who himself was indicted on drug conspiracy charges).
Under terms of a plea bargain, the brothers agreed to forfeit $270 million to the government.
BMF began in the early 1990s in Detroit, authorities said, and eventually extended their activities to Missouri, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, California and Texas -- using vehicles equipped with hidden compartments to transport cocaine and cash.
65 people have been indicted in the BMF case, most of which have pleaded guilty and half have been sentenced, the U.S. Attorney's Office told the paper.
In massive seizures in the case, the government has taken more than $19 million in assets from ring members -- including 13 homes, 35 vehicles, over $5 million in cash, and millions of dollars worth of jewelry.
One of the best-known defendants in the case was famed jeweler Jacob Arabov (aka Jacob The Jeweler) who, back in June, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison, and fined $50,000 for lying to federal agents investigating the drug ring. He was originally arrested for conspiring to launder money for the BMF.
